Bruce Schneier found an interesting article in U.S. News and World Report regrading the latest annual report from the Internet Crime Complaint Center about auction fraud and non-delivery of items bought being the most common internet crimes for 2006.

The report itself talks about it not being truly authoritative, due to the fact that many auction sites, like eBay, give direct links to the IC3 so people can complain, which encourages reporting of those crimes, while a lot of other online crimes, like child porn, go unreported. Even so:

…the survey is a useful snapshot, even if it tells us what we already
know: that the Internet, like the rest of life, is full of bad guys.
Caveat emptor.

So, the top 10 crimes for last year, according to IC3’s report are, in order:

  1. Auction Fraud
  2. Non-delivery (of purchased items)
  3. Check Fraud
  4. Credit/Debit Card Fraud
  5. Computer Fraud
  6. Confidence Fraud
  7. Financial Institutions Fraud
  8. Identity Theft
  9. Investment Fraud
  10. Child Pornography

Remember to listen to your common sense before you give out your data, your money or your time online :)
