These things usually are a bunch of useless goobley doo, but this one is, at least to me, interesting :) Why? because it’s all about books…Science Fiction and Fantasy (oh, and horror, but I don’t care about those) books.
I stole this one from a blog I recently discovered, which is filled with interesting stuff, called SFSignal…go check it out, if you enjoy SF/F books, lots of nice things there.
Without further explanations, here’s the book meme I stole.
Well, no explanations, just an addition :) The original meme doesn’t tag others, and I think that’s most of the fun about these things, so…Handy, Rich, and Edgar, you are it :)
Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror?
Depends on my mood…this past week, has been fantasy, the week before that, SF.
Hardback or Trade Paperback or Mass Market Paperback?
Uhm…ebooks :) I don’t read paper books anymore. I buy ebooks when I can (which explains why I read so much Baen stuff :) but if I find nowhere to buy legal ebooks, I’ll buy the cheapest paper edition I can get my hands on and hunt for an…unofficial…ebooks release so I can actually read it.
Heinlein or Asimov?
Asimov…he was my introduction to SF many many years ago, and continues to be one of my favourite authors, not only of SF but also of history books.
Amazon or Brick and Mortar?
Uhm…brick and mortar, when I can’t find a legal ebook. I do hit mobipocket, which is an Amazon subsidiary, for ebooks, once in a while…damn ebooks are expensive there, tho.
Barnes & Noble or Borders?
Unfortunately, neither…we don’t have ‘em in Mexico, at least not in my city.
Hitchhiker or Discworld?
Hitchhiker. I’ve never finished reading the whole Discworld series…there’s always something else that gets my attention before I open the next book.
Bookmark or Dogear?
When I used to read paper, bookmarks, or remembering the page…I *hate* dogeared books.
Magazine: Asimov’s Science Fiction or Fantasy & Science Fiction?
Actually, neither in the last few years. Baen’s Universe would be my current choice.
Alphabetize by author Alphabetize by title or random?
By author’s last name in my hard disk. By genre and then by author’s last name in my bookcases.
Keep, Throw Away or Sell?
I keep them…I’m an information packrat…if it can be read, I’ll keep it.
Year’s Best Science Fiction series (edited by Gardner Dozois) or Years Best SF series (edited by David G. Hartwell)?
Dozoi’s…tho Hartwell’s is a very close second.
Keep dustjacket or toss it?
Uhm…keep it if it survives. That’s because I carry the books I’m currently reading around with me at all times…which is why I went ebook a few years back…carrying 3 or 4 books with me around always is a PITA.
Read with dustjacket or remove it?
I remove it when I’m at home or any other stay-for-a-while-sitting-down-and-reading place…keep it on when I’m reading while raiding in a taxi or any other 2-minutes-to-read situation.
Short story or novel?
Novels. I *do* read short stories…but if given the choice, I’ll always grab the novel first. On the other hand, some times I carry short story anthologies with me, and I’ll read a short story when I know it’s just a short time to read stuff.
Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
Harry Potter…never read Lemony Snicket.
Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
Chapter breaks whenever possible.
“It was a dark and stormy night” or “Once upon a time”?
“Once upon a time”
Buy or Borrow?
Buy buy buy. Borrowing books means I won’t be able to re-read it when the mood strikes again.
Buying choice: Book Reviews, Recommendation or Browse?
Browsing, closely followed by recommendations.
Lewis or Tolkien?
Tolkien…I’m one of those psychos that read the LotR+hobbit series once a year…usually around the end of the year.
Hard SF or Space Opera?
Space Opera. Character development is as important to me as hard science content, and most of the authors I currently favor are good at doing them together.
Collection (short stories by the same author) or Anthology (short stories by different authors)?
Anthologies…I don’t think there’s more than…10 or so collections in my library…there’s probably a couple hundred anthologies.
Hugo or Nebula?
I don’t really pay attention to which book got what…I’ve read Hugo and Nebula winners that I like and I’ve read Hugo and Nebula winners that I couldn’t finish…and me not finishing a book is extremely rare.
Golden Age SF or New Wave SF?
Actually, both. I still enjoy the open-eyed wonder from the Golden Age, but I also enjoy the…harder edged view of the New Wave….both have great stuff.
Tidy ending or Cliffhanger?
Uhm…I’m happy with either. Tidy endings give me a sense of completion that allows me to say goodbye to the story and characters, cliffhangers, on the other hand, tend to make me think, ponder and fantasize…which I always qualify as A Good Thing.
Morning reading, Afternoon reading or Nighttime reading?
All day lol! I read every minute I can, which is why I prefer ebooks. I’ll read while in line at the bank, while commuting (on the lovely occasions when I’m not doing the driving), while I wait for a compile to be done…if there’s 2 free minutes, I’ll read.
Standalone or Series?
Series…the longer the better. My current love affair is with David Weber’s Honor Harrington series and with Eric Flint’s 1632 universe…oh, and with John Ringo’s Paladin of Shadows…and with a few other series lol!
Urban fantasy or high fantasy?
Both/either…depending on my mood. Tho I read more high fantasy than urban.
New or used?
New, whenever po$$ible :)
