Ok, I know it’s been a while since the last book review, but I’ve been busy :P
On the other hand, I managed to get my grubby little hands on the ARC of A Deeper Blue, fifth book in the Paladin of Shadows series by John Ringo, and…it rocks :)
So far, the series is made up of 5 books, four of which have already been reviewed by me :)
- Ghost (link to review)
- Kildar (link to review)
- Choosers of the Slain (link to review)
- Unto the Breach (link to review)
- A Deeper Blue (link to sample chapters at baen.com)
We catch up with Mike Harmon, aka Mike Jenkins, aka Ghost, aka Kildar, a few weeks after Unto the Breach ends…and things aren’t pretty. Mike is broken down about the dead of so many friends, particularly about Gretchen’s, and he doesn’t seem to be able to pull himself out of the depression, not even after spending two months drunk. The Keldara are worried, their Kildar may be becoming useless as a leader, and the President of the USA calls. Just to make things better, the Mountain Tigers get called in to try to stop an attack on US soil with VX gas, one of the deadliest binary agents in the world.
When Mike decides to tell the US to fuck off, not wanting to get any more of his friends killed, Colonel Thomas Nielson, his XO, decides to take the mission…millions of people in the US are in jeopardy, and he can’t stand on the sidelines.
Things, of course, get interesting when Master Chief Adams, one of Mike’s oldest friends, and Patrick Vanner, the Mountain Tigers’ intel chief get wounded in an ambush aimed at him while starting the mission; Mike is pissed off and ready to kick ass and not even bother taking names. In many ways, more than in other books in the series, we get to see that Mike is not only an efficient killer and leader of killers, but a human who has feelings.
The newest adventure sends the Tigers to run all over South Florida and the Bahamas, shootings and fun adventures happen all over the place, even in the amusement parks…lots of fun, to think that the terrorists may decide to release VX gas at Disney.
This book is, without a doubt, a worthy continuation of the series, filled with all the elements that have made the Keldara’s story one of my favourites, and Ghost one of the most well constructed characters I’ve seen in a long time…well worth investing the time and money to read :)
