This is an interesting take, with (anecdotal) evidence on the fact that even tho mainstream media loves to bitch and moan about bloggers stealing their content, they aren’t shy of doing it themselves. In Anatomy of a (stolen) scoop Andy Dehnart talks about the journey one of his posts took, from his blog to the AP wire and E! Online, among other places. I think it’s great that the journos are getting the fact that blogs matter and do have interesting and useful facts to offer in the news dissemination game, but…stealing content? that truly sucks.
I have been the victim of plagiarism a few times, and let me tell you, it’s something to be pissed off about. You spend your time and energy getting a post or an article researched and written, just to find somebody else grab it and use it without attribution…it grates. But when it’s somebody who should know better, like a journalist? It really pisses me off. Thankfully, so far nothing I’ve written has ended up in a mainstream article without attribution, because I don’t really know how I’d react to that. From what Andy writes, they are not the most decent people when it comes to fixing their mistakes, and that gets me all rev’ed up…I’d really make a stink about it, that’s for sure.
Anyway, read Andy’s post, it’s worth reading just so you understand that the mainstream media isn’t as ethical as they’d like you to believe they are.
