A couple of days ago I found an interesting post in David Dean’s blog called 5 excellent places to find DRM-free science fiction. In his post, David talks about two of my favorite places to get ebooks, Baen Free Library and Baen Webscriptions as well as 3 other good sites. As you may have guessed by now, I am a voracious reader (I don’t post reviews of everything I read…that’d mean 5-8 reviews a week…and I don’t have time to write that much :) and my preferred way to read is in electronic form in my ipaq.
I own…uhm…probably 3,000 paper books right now (I do get rid of books once in a while :) but I have one strange reading habit…I don’t read serially, that is, I don’t read one book at a time…I read 2 or 3 books at the same time, going back and forth between them as the mood strikes me. And I read almost every free minute I have. If I go to see a client, I’ll read while i wait for him/her to recieve me; if I’m working on a computer, I’ll read while I wait for it to finish compiling this or that; if I go shopping, I’ll read in the cashier’s line.
If you look at my reading habits, you’ll understand why I prefer electronic books. Carrying two books with you everywhere you go is a pain in the a**, and the ipaq fits in my pocket without problems, and I just turn it on and off and it never loses where I am.
On the other hand, going back to David’s post, he missed one great place to get DRM-free ebooks, which is, in my opinion, the grandfather of them all: Project Gutenberg.
It has tons and tons and tons of ebooks in many different formats. Yes, there’s no brand new books here, like in Baen or the other sites that David mentions, but…books don’t need to be new to be worth reading :) And their collections grows every year, with new books going into the public domain and new books being captured by the volunteers that are part of the project.
So…if you are looking for a classic book, go check Project Gutenberg, it’ll be worth your time.
Oh, and while you are reading David’s post, read the comments too, there’s other good places cited there.
