James Doohan, who played Scotty in the original Star Trek, died a year ago, on July 20th 2005, at age 85. In December of this year or January of next year, his ashes will be sent to space in a rocket, together with about 100 other people, including astronaut Gordon Cooper. This after last year’s attempt was delayed because the rocket was still being tested.

Scotty’s widow, Wende, said last year, in a letter to the fans, that the actor would have “given almost anything to be able to actually go into space”.

Let’s hope this year’s sendoff is a success, he gave us a whole lot of fun and is an icon of geek culture.
