After weeks and weeks of rumours, it has happened at last…AMD bought ATI.
You may guess I’m not very enthusiastic about it…and you’d be right. I have a problem with this, a serious one.
I *am* an AMD fanboy…all computers in my house are, at this point, powered by AMD processors, from a 386/40 doing DNS to my AMD64 desktop, everything is powered by AMD…but…the boxes that have video cards have NVidia in them, because IMNSHO, ATI on linux sucks planets through capillary straws.
Don’t get me wrong…ATI’s hardware is great, and may even be better than NVidia’s…but…they still haven’t learned how to write damn drivers! And it seems like they picked their worse driver writers to write their linux drivers, which means that they are even worse than their windows drivers, which are usually bad enough.
So…I’m pretty conflicted about this…hopefully, AMD will see the light and put real programmers to do the driver development on linux and we’ll finally get some real drivers that may make for real competition in the graphic card business in the linux world, but I’m not holding my breath.
Anyway, here’s the Press Release and some reports about it.
