Jim Baen, the man behind Baen Books (my favourite SF/Fantasy publishing house, as you may have figured from all my book reviews) and Jim Baen’s Universe, had a stroke on monday. Toni Weisskopf, chief editor in Baen Books, posted to Baen’s Bar, the web board that Jim uses to communicate with all of us, the following message:

Subject: Jim Baen’s condition
Author: Universe Staff
Date: 15 Jun 2006 10:48 PM === Official announcement from Toni ===

Dear Barflies

I’m sorry to have to announce that Jim Baen suffered a stroke on Monday, and has been in the hospital ever since. His condition is serious, but it’s too early for any prognosis as to how he’ll fare from here on in.

His family has arrived in NC, and are with him in the hospital. I’ve been to see him, as have other members of Baen’s staff and his friend David Drake. In the meantime, so far as Baen Books is concerned, our plans continue on schedule.

The business is fine, we’re all simply very
concerned about Jim.

Toni Weisskopf
Chief editor, Baen Books

I’m glad Baen Books will continue working as scheduled…and I’m also concerned about Jim.

Pray for him, the world needs more people like him.
