This getting-a-new-job thing is overrated. I decided that I needed something that’d give me money every day, instead of just every couple of months or so, whenever I got a new IT project.
After some thought, I decided that human vices are great money makers…but since I prefer to stay inside the law, drug dealing and pimping were out of the list :) So…I got into the other big vice…alcohol.
I bought a beer store (we call them depósitos in Mexico).
I buy beer for cheap and sell it not-as-cheap to restaurants and bars and other places that sell it to the people, and it’s, indeed, a nice way to get steady income, even if it’s not as much money as I can make with a good IT project…but it’s money every single day.
So…what’s the problem? Well…we are open from 12 noon to 12 midnight, Monday to Thursday, 12noon to 2am on Friday and Saturday…and I don’t have a computer nor internet access from there yet :(
In other words, I’ve been offline most of the day for the last…week and a half or so. I haven’t been offline for this long in…6 or 7 years, and I’ve come to realize one thing…being offline *SUCKS*!
I’ve gotten used to the constant stream of information that being online all of my awake time implies. I have…way too many unread blogs in my textcast reader (Blogbridge), zero articles posted on my blog, zero new books read (haven’t had time to buy any new books to read), zero contact with my friends…life absolutely sucks this way.
The problem is that I don’t know yet if the store will make enough money this month for me to pay for internet access :) Which means I have to wait at least another week to see how the business does and try to decide if I’ll have the money to pay for it, and then get cable installed and then build a “new” computer from the parts I have in my junk pile so I’ll have something at the store that at least allows me to run a browser, a textcast reader, an IM program and an IRC client. Once that is accomplished, I’ll be able to feel like a complete human being again.
I don’t understand how people can live without internet access.

Awww, Hang in there big fella. Dunno if you caught my articles, but I’m digging Xubuntu for the old hardware (if you get to that point…)
http://www.solo-technology.com/blog/2006/06/05/quick-update-on-the-linux-old-machine-quest/
I like Ubuntu a lot…I’ll try Xubuntu and kubuntu before deciding what’d be best for what I manage to build. Hell, I’d use kubuntu (yes, I’m a kde user :P :) on my 64bit box, if they had gone to 64mixed instead of 64pure. From what I’ve read, they’ll go mixed for the next release…so I’ll try it then :)
As for the job…I gotta hang in, no much choice about it lol! It’s too big an investment to give up on it after 2 weeks :)
