I tend to watch the blog of the LibrarianInBlack, mostly because…I like books, and she’s one of the most interesting librarians in the blogosphere…and today she came up with one of the best ideas I’ve read in a long long time.
She talks about her asking non-techies about RSS and podcasts, and finding out that nobody has a clue what RSS is but podcasts were known. This, obviously, stumped her…I mean…RSS is older, for starters, and it’s also, at least for me, a better medium to transmit information, at least some kinds of it…it’s not like you can click a link in a podcast, right? At least I’ve not found a way to do that :)
So, our intelligent librarian came to the conclusion that the problem with RSS is not about the tech, but about…the name. And I have to agree with her…yes, I’m a geek, and yes, I can remember weird geeky names like RSS and ISO9660 and so on and so forth, because I care about those names, but non-techies don’t care *that* much, so…names like RSS just fly over their heads, because it tells them nothing of what RSS is or can do for them.
She proposes a change of name for RSS feeds, calling them instead…
Textcasts
That’s a beautiful name, you know? It tells people what it does, it’s short, simple and easy to remember…if we start calling the feeds textcasting, more people will learn of this beautifull technology and will start using it…I have to vote for her idea…RSS is out, welcome to the Textcasting Era :)
